In most of American higher education and even most policy schools, military history is relegated to the sidelines. Rarely is it taught in its own right, with a focus on the technologies and tactics of war, the strategies and major campaign plans of the participants, the mistakes made and lessons learned, the great “what ifs?” of history. This is regrettable, not least because it impoverishes our own debates on issues of war and peace. Military history doesn’t provide lessons in simple cookbook style, as Richard Neustadt and Ernest May underscored in their classic 1986 book, “Thinking in Time.” It needs to be taken in, mulled over and discussed. Surveying the major wars of modern history, I would propose two general themes that have special relevance for today.

VIENNA, Jan 6 (Reuters) - A soldier was killed and another injured after an exchange of fire at an airfield barracks in the Austrian town of Wiener Neustadt on Friday, a Defence Ministry spokesperson said. Austrian news agency APA reported that the soldier on guard duty had opened fire during an apparent argument and that he was then shot by the higher-ranking military officer. "In the airfield barracks ... the guard soldier was killed and another soldier injured in an exchange of fire shortly before 7 a.m. (0600 GMT)," ministry spokesperson Michael Bauer tweeted. Austrian broadcaster ORF reported that the guard who was killed at the barracks in the town, about 60 km (40 miles) south of Vienna, was aged 20 and from the province of Lower Austria. Pentru prima dată în istorie, concursul a găzduit o sesiune de evaluare concepută exclusiv pentru vinurile rose – „Rose Selection Concours Mondial de Bruxelles”, înainte de competiția principală. „Rose Selection Concours Mondial de Bruxelles” s-a desfășurat în perioada 1-5 martie, iar în competiție au participat în total 1 000 de vinuri rose. Printre obiectivele sale de bază se numără diversificarea piețelor de desfacere și promovarea vinurilor moldovenești prin programul național și brandul național vinicol „Vinul Moldovei.
